It’s May, It’s May – The Glorious Month of May!

Cinco de Mayo has a special meaning at Camp Illahee!  It marks our official summer countdown and it is quite a fiesta around here!  Camp directors wear a variety of sombreros during the year and in May, it’s the paint, plant and clean hats.  The office becomes the supply zone.  We divide our days between checking in the last of the camper forms (due May 1st!) and following up with counselors, to ordering supplies and opening up camp, which we call “waking up the beast.” It includes touching up cabin signs and anything that is  Illahee “green” – cabin bookshelves, the gaga pit, rocking chairs, picnic tables, dining hall doors.  We’ve been planting ten flats of impatiens along the entrance to camp, redoing the barrels around the office and of course planting the farm garden.  Other more glamorous projects are pressure washing the tennis courts, hanging up wind screens, washing the buses, gathering fire extinguishers for inspection, and organizing the office basement.  This summer, campers are going to enjoy the new covered back deck on the Wishing Well which has a newly renovated kitchen and bathrooms (keeping our wonderful Illahee nurses happy!)   We hope that May passes quickly because we can’t wait for the fun to begin when we celebrate Illahee’s 95th camp season- sure to be the BEST summer ever!
