The Final Countdown!

Friday, May 18, 2007

You would not believe the activity around camp these past few weeks. I always need to remember that as excited as we are getting, there are a lot of you who want to know every detail about what's going on in preparation for the BEST summer ever! In other words, it shouldn't be THREE weeks between posts (at least this time of year)!

As you can see from the picture, the new riding rings and pasture fencing at the barn looks AMAZING! Illahee is going to have the best equestrian facilities of any camp I know of...the four board black Lexington-style fence makes us look like we are breeding the next contender for the Derby. Besides fencing, we have been re-wiring the barn, unloading bales and bales of "Gucci" hay all the way from Michigan, and bags of "oh-so'soft" pine shaving bedding for the Illahee herd. All of these great improvements will welcome new riding director Tiffany Ehnes when she arrives at camp for orientation in a few weeks. Tiffany has had a lifetime of horses already...her mom has been the equestrian director at Blue Star Camps for almost thirty years. Lauri Bothern is coming from former director Harriet Morton's barn to be our barn manager. Harriet is taking the summer off to be with her young children and husband, and to manage herown camps. We are thrilled that Lauri can be with Tiffany to help our program be the best ever!

In other news, Laurie, Gordon and Kris completed their lifeguarding recertification in a cold pool last week. The two girls were fighting over who got to rescue Gordon! Everyone's favorite Nancy was back at camp this week to help open the kitchen, which has also received a MAJOR overhaul this past winter. She will be working closely with Dee Hooper to make sure our Illahee tradition of the BEST food anywhere keeps on coming. Laurie has been planting flowers (we should start calling her Martha!) and camp is starting to look great thanks to James' expert eye. We are all beside ourselves waiting for the first arrival. There is a lot to do before then, but it will be here before we know it! Woo HOO!
