New Tennis Courts are Underway!

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

The pavers will put two inches of asphalt down; then another inch of very fine finish asphalt on top!

I have to admit. I have been procrastinating! Looking back at spring posts in the Illahee News made me realize that about this time every year, I get so busy that I forget to post an update on all that is going on at camp! I also think that the beautiful spring weather has something to do with it as well. Who wants to sit inside in front of a computer when it is absolutely gorgeous outside? There is a lot going on at camp, and I do need to update you!

So, where to start? Our HUGE project this year has been rebuilding all of our tennis courts. It has taken almost all winter and is still not done! BUT, the hard part is finished, and the results are going to be spectacular! Gone will be all of those old counselor cars that were parked down by the Rec Lodge. We have a brand new parking lot up on the hill that will hold all of our staff cars, the buses, dumpsters and everything that we want to be out of site in a place as beautiful as Camp Illahee. That's not the exciting part though. Those of you who have been following the website through the year know that we removed the courts that were over in the pasture. They were getting some pretty big cracks in them. Nobody liked heading over there to play anyway. One of my (Gordon) pet peeves has always been seeing cars in camp. Since we didn't have enough parking anyway, we decided to build two new courts where the staff parking lot was. To do this, we had to reroute sewer lines, reroute the exit road, cross a creek, and build the new lot. The camp exit now goes out where White Pine used to be...where we parked the buses and where the dumpster used to be. Gone is the White Pine cabin and the big old fence on the road. Once the grass is fully in (by camp), it should be a really pretty exit under some very old pine trees lining the road. We also took the opportunity to dig up and rebuild the three other courts below Curtis in Main Camp. So we will have brand new courts in camp! Did you know tennis is our most popular activity? No small wonder because we have Dave Hartsock, our tennis pro back for another year and lots of great staff to help him out! I can't wait to get on those courts. Check back soon for more news about some very exciting staff members who will be back this summer!
